Gwin Grabs Lead at the 42nd Bright Realty Texas State Open

LEWISVILLE, Texas – Robert Gwin, 2010 Texas State Open Champion and Montgomery, Texas native, fired a 3-under par, 69 to take the lead through the second round at 5-under par, 139.  Gwin finished his round today with a birdie on hole #8 and hole #9 to card a total of five birdies and two bogies during his round.  

“My goal today was not to try anything I couldn’t handle,” Gwin said. “ I laid up on almost every par 5. I went for the highest percentage shots possible and putted really well.”

Following today’s round, the 144 player field was cut to the low 50 scores and ties. Gwin will lead a field of 50 players into the third round of the championship.  46 professionals and 4 amateurs survived the 148 (+4) cut and will play over the weekend.

At one shot off the lead is the first round co-leader Chris Brown of Garland, Texas. Brown stands alone in second after shooting a round of even par today.  Nathan Tyler of Tucson, Arizona sits in sole third at 3-under par, while three players, David Gossett, Matthew Vela and Travis Woolf, will start tomorrow’s round tied for fourth.  Tom Murray is currently four back of Gwin at one-under par along with five other players, including assistant professional at The Lakes at Castle Hills, Brian Norman.

Blaine Weiterman of Kilgore, Texas, and 2010 low amateur, fired the low round of the day at 5-under par, 67. Weiterman, who was at 7-over par after round one, carded one bogey, four birdies and an eagle on hole #4 to make the field for the weekend rounds at 146.

The current low amateur is Dru Fenimore (a) of Dallas, Texas. Fenimore will battle Kolton Crawford (a) of Mansfield, Texas, Vincent Martino (a) of Southlake, Texas, and Will Dusenbury (a) of League City, Texas over the next two days to join the notable list of low-amateurs at the Texas State Open which includes names such as Jhonattan Vegas (2005) and Martin Piller (2006 & 2007).

The Lakes at Castle Hills is hosting the 72-hole stroke play event for all four rounds. The Lakes at Castle Hills is a 7,256 yard, par 72 layout.  The total purse is $125,000.00, with $25,000.00 awarded to the champion. 

The 42nd Bright Realty Texas State Open is presented by UST Mamiya.

Round three will commence on Saturday, August 4 at 8:00 a.m.  Gwin and Brown will tee-off at 12:12 p.m. Starting times and groupings can be found at www.ntpga.com. Admission is free to all.
