Kern Captures Yamaha Golf-Car Company / Lajitas Golf Resort Match Play Championship

ODESSA, Texas – The Championship match of the Yamaha Golf-Car Company / Lajitas Golf Resort Match Play Championship featured the #2 seed Ben Kern, PGA head professional at Diamondback Golf Club, and the #4 seed Danny Coughlan, PGA head professional at Abilene Country Club. The match resulted in a 5&4 victory for Kern. 
 
Kern took an early lead going 2UP through four holes, and never let Coughlan back in the match. By hole #10, Kern had a 5UP lead. On hole #12, Coughlan made birdie to bring it back to 4UP, but a birdie by Kern two holes later on #14 sealed the match for a 5&4 win.
 
This marks Kern’s first Match Play Championship victory and second NTPGA individual major championship. He also won the Northern Texas PGA Professional Championship earlier this year. Kern took home $5,500 of the $36,800 Open Division purse.
 
The Yamaha Golf-Car Company / Lajitas Golf Resort Match Play Championship was contested October 9-11 at Odessa Country Club’s Old Course in Odessa, Texas, a 7,069-yard, par 72 layout.  The Championship was presented by Adventures In Golf and AT&T Byron Nelson. The top 32 players on the final 2017 Yamaha Golf-Car Company / Lajitas Golf Resort Player of the Year Points Challenge presented by Adventures In Golf were invited to compete in the season-ending major championship.
