The Texas State Open has a long and storied history. The Open began in 1960 when the great amateur Homero Blancos captured the title. No amateur has since been able to win the Texas State Open.
The Texas State Open has crowned many past and future stars over its 33-year history. Past Champions who have gone on to compete on the PGA TOUR include Ben Crenshaw, Lee Trevino, Jeff Maggert, Blaine McCallister, Brad Lardon, Kris Cox, Kelly Grunewald and Cameron Beckman. The purse has steadily grown over the years and the $150,000.00 purse slated for 2007 makes the Texas State Open one of the largest state open purses in the nation.
This year, Kelly Grunewald of Arlington will have the opportunity to become the first player in history to claim the Texas State Open title for a fourth time. Last year Grunewald joined two other players that have won three Texas State Open titles: Ben Crenshaw (’75, ’79 and ’80) and Jeff Maggert (’88, ’90 and ’94). Lee Trevino leads the list of those with two Texas State Open victories. Grunewald will attempt to make tournament history, July 12-15 at The Cascades.
