Bingaman Holds Narrow Lead at Northern Texas PGA Professional Championship

Steven Clements • August 15, 2023

FRISCO, TX – Brandon Bingaman, PGA assistant professional at Bent Tree Country Club holds a one stroke lead after 18 holes of play at the Northern Texas PGA Professional Championship. Bingaman fired a first round 3-under-par, 33-36–69 on Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco.

Bingaman birdied four of his last five holes to jump up the leaderboard at the end of his round. Playing earlier in the day, he took advantage of the calmer conditions as the wind picked up significantly in the afternoon and into the evening. He will be joined in the final group tomorrow afternoon by Robby Bruns, PGA head professional at Trinity Forest Golf Club and Brian Norman, PGA instructor at Lakewood Country Club. Bruns is the only other player under-par after his first round 70. Norman sits three strokes back of the leader at even-par.

Fields Ranch East proved to be a tough test for the field. The course set-up for the championship is similar to the set-ups that were used at the 2023 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship. This includes hole locations and yardages.

The field is competing for eight qualifying spots into the 57th PGA Professional Championship set to take place April 28 - May 1, 2024 back at Fields Ranch at PGA Frisco. JJ Killeen, PGA director of golf at Red Feather Golf and Social Club and Gabe Reynolds, PGA director of Instruction at Topgolf Dallas are already exempt since they competed in the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club. In total, the NTPGA will have 10 professionals represent the Section at PGA Frisco in April.

The 2023 Northern Texas PGA Professional Championship features a record purse of $50,000. That is double the size of last year's purse. Tomorrow’s champion will earn $4,850. The Championship is presented by Corebridge Financial, Club Car, and Rolex, and is supported by Titleist / FootJoy, Callaway, Nike, and TaylorMade. Supporting partners include Gallagher, Golf Channel and the PGA TOUR. Presenting sponsors include United Commercial Energy Partners, Therabody, Toptracer and the AT&T Byron Nelson.

This Championship is the third of four individual stroke play events that comprise the Yamaha Golf-Car Company | Srixon / Cleveland Golf / Asics Player of the Year Points Challenge presented by Adventures In Golf that serve as a chance to earn points for the 2023 Texas Joe Black Cup and Levy Cup teams.

The PGA of America announced today that Ronny Glanton, PGA head professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course, will be inducted into the PGA of America Hall of Fame. Glanton, a native of Mineral Wells, Texas, began his career in 1981 as an Assistant Professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course in Richardson, Texas. Upon achieving PGA of America membership in 1984, he took over as Head Professional and has been at the Richardson facility ever since. He is the only member to serve twice as President of the NTPGA (2006-07, ‘18-’19). Glanton played a key role in the PGA of America’s relocation to Frisco, Texas. He is a passionate advocate for junior golf, developing impactful programs like the Sherrill Park Learning Center and the Hawks junior golf team, which have introduced thousands of new golfers to the game; his leadership in the creation of “The Ronny” Golf Park on the PGA Frisco campus further expands community outreach and player development. Among his previous awards are PGA of America Golf Professional of the Year (2020), NTPGA Golf Professional of the Year (1999, ‘07, ‘19), NTPGA Bill Strausbaugh Award (2003-05, ‘08, ‘14) and NTPGA Merchandiser of the Year (1994), plus induction into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame in 2022. Glanton actively supports his colleagues, raising over $100,000 through pro-ams for PGA Members facing medical hardships. He’s also been a four-time contestant in the PGA Professional Championship, five-time contestant in the Senior PGA Professional National Championship and seven-time participant in the PGA TOUR Byron Nelson (now the CJ Cup Byron Nelson). Glanton is a three-time NTPGA Major Champion, six-time Senior Division Major Champion and a 17-time member of the NTPGA Joe Black Cup Team, which he has also captained three times. The PGA of America Hall of Fame originated in 1940 at the suggestion of famed sportswriter Grantland Rice. It is the highest honor the PGA of America can bestow upon its membership or ambassadors of the game. Congratulations to Ronny on this momentous occasion!
