Jarred Jeter Fends off the Competition to Win the Joyce Crane| Veritex Bank Section Championship

Steven Clements • September 12, 2023

ODESSA, TX - Jarred Jeter, PGA assistant professional at Midland Country Club remained consistent to win his first Northern Texas PGA section major championship. He carded rounds of 65-67–132, 12-under-par, at Odessa Country Club’s Links Course.

With nearly a 30-degree drop in the temperature and a rare west Texas rain storm, the final round proved to be a tougher test than the first round. Jeter started his round with a bogey and made another on the 5th hole, but he would gain momentum on the back-nine, where he shot 5-under-par.

“One of the things I have been missing all year was the putter and I finally got it rolling today…. a couple putts fell my way and the rest is history,” said Jeter. “This was a win for the family, the whole group of Midland Country Club guys”.

For the third straight year the Northern Texas PGA Members in the field are competing for an overall purse of $100,000. Jeter was awarded $9,000 and an exemption into  THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson in 2024.

Speaking about earning THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson exemption, Jeter said,  “It’s going to be an unbelievable experience. That’s one of the reasons I was looking forward to this event. Being able to play well and finally reach that dream of playing in a PGA TOUR event.”

The championship also featured a Senior Division made up of 27 professionals ages 50 and over, playing for a separate title and purse. Rick Woodson, PGA instructor at Sherrill Park Golf Course held steady after an opening round, 33-33–66, 6-under-par. He fired an even-par final round and maintained his three stroke lead to win the division and his second individual major championship of the year.

“I putted really well yesterday, no bogeys. I kept the ball in front of me and made some putts,” said Woodson. “Very very tough today. Total opposite wind direction. I thought it was a really good test.” Woodson earned $4,500, the highest Senior Division champion’s check of the year, for his victory.

The Joyce Crane | Veritex Community Bank Section Championship was presented by THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, BlueGolf, Ewing Automotive Group, GT Golf Supplies, LIV-PUR, the PGA TOUR, the Oestmann Family Foundation, StrackaLine, Strike Visuals and TankLogix. The championship also served as the final chance for professionals to earn points for the 2023 Joe Black Cup and Levy Cup Matches teams. Points earned were 1.5 the normal value.

The PGA of America announced today that Ronny Glanton, PGA head professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course, will be inducted into the PGA of America Hall of Fame. Glanton, a native of Mineral Wells, Texas, began his career in 1981 as an Assistant Professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course in Richardson, Texas. He is the only member to serve twice as President of the NTPGA (2006-07, ‘18-’19). Glanton played a key role in the PGA of America’s relocation to Frisco, Texas. He is a passionate advocate for junior golf, developing impactful programs like the Sherrill Park Learning Center and the Hawks junior golf team, which have introduced thousands of new golfers to the game; his leadership in the creation of “The Ronny” Golf Park on the PGA Frisco campus further expands community outreach and player development. Among his previous awards are PGA of America Golf Professional of the Year (2020), NTPGA Golf Professional of the Year (1999, ‘07, ‘19), NTPGA Bill Strausbaugh Award (2003-05, ‘08, ‘14) and NTPGA Merchandiser of the Year (1994), plus induction into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame in 2022. Glanton actively supports his colleagues, raising over $100,000 through pro-ams for PGA Members facing medical hardships. He’s also been a four-time contestant in the PGA Professional Championship, five-time contestant in the Senior PGA Professional National Championship and seven-time participant in the PGA TOUR Byron Nelson (now the CJ Cup Byron Nelson). Glanton is a three-time NTPGA Major Champion, six-time Senior Division Major Champion and a 17-time member of the NTPGA Joe Black Cup Team, which he has also captained three times. The PGA of America Hall of Fame originated in 1940 at the suggestion of famed sportswriter Grantland Rice. It is the highest honor the PGA of America can bestow upon its membership or ambassadors of the game.
