McCoy Claims Prize Possessions Eastern Championship
Anna, TX –
With a bogey-free final round capped with an eagle on hole #15, Craig McCoy, assistant professional at Denton Country Club, carded an impressive 7-under 65 today to capture the Prize Possessions Eastern Championship and claim his first Northern Texas PGA individual major championship. With rounds of 68-65--133, 11-under-par, McCoy finished six strokes ahead of the field.
“My expectations for this week were really non-existent,” said McCoy when asked about his first victory. “I worked my booty off last week for our Member-Guest and hadn’t played in probably a week, so I had low expectations, but the putter got hot. This was a good way to start [the summer] off.
When you win in what in my opinion is one of the strongest, probably the strongest, Sections in the country...anytime you can win an event in this Section you know you’re playing well.”
The Championship included a Senior Division that was comprised of 33 professionals aged 50 or older who competed for a separate $10,385 purse and played at a modified yardage. Tom Strueber, PGA Life Member, finished with a two-day total of 5-under-par 139 to claim the 2019 Prize Possessions Eastern Championship Senior Division champion title. He took home a check for $1,300.
This 36-hole NTPGA major championship was the first of four individual stroke play events that comprise the Yamaha Golf-Car Company & Srixon /Cleveland Golf / XXIO Player of the Year Points Challenge presented by Adventures In Golf. It also serves as a qualifier for the 2019 Texas Joe Black Cup and Levy Cup teams.
The Prize Possession Eastern Championship featured a field of 116 Northern Texas PGA Members and Associates competing at Hurricane Creek Country Club in Anna.
The Open Division field competed for a share of the $26,115 purse with McCoy taking home $3,200 for first place. The overall Championship purse was $36,500.
The Prize Possessions Eastern Championship was presented by AT&T Byron Nelson, E-Z-GO, PGA TOUR, Strike Visuals, Surf & Turf Golf and Thiel & Thiel.
