Norman and Massa (a) Win Again at the Srixon and Nike Pro-Scratch Championship

DALLAS, Texas (April 1) –
Brian Norman, PGA instructor at Lakewood Country Club, and Bobby Massa (a) fought through a 3-hole playoff to win the 2025 Srixon and Nike Pro-Scratch title. It marks their third victory in four attempts.

Starting the final round one-stroke behind the lead, they carded the second lowest round of the day at 8-under-par, 32-32–64. Their five birdies on the back-nine was enough to get them into a playoff.

Joining them in the playoff was Peyton Coursey, Associate at Dallas Athletic Club, and David Schultz (a). The pair turned in the lowest round of the day and the Championship at 9-under-par, 31-32–63.

Both teams played in the favorable morning conditions, which featured tame winds, compared to the gusty afternoon conditions. This also left them both with lengthy waits to see if their scores would hold up through the afternoon wave. They did.

The playoff for the Open Division title began on the par-4, 18th hole.  Both teams made par and they proceeded to the par-5, 3rd hole. Two birdies on the par-5, 3rd hole led both teams back to the 18th tee.

All four players hit the fairway. Norman was the first to hit his approach and he hit the green. Then the pair from Dallas Athletic Club both missed the green. Finally, Massa (a) hit his approach to 15-feet, just off the green, long left of the hole.

Massa (a) was the last to attempt his birdie opportunity and stepped up to the downhill left-to-right putt with a chance to win the Championship. Tracking the whole way, it dropped and the pair had won their third Pro-Scratch title.

“We got off to a kind of slow start, but got on the back and got hot and made some birdies,” said Norman about their round this morning. “We were just ham and egging it,” added Massa (a).

“We think very similarly about golf so it’s easy to bounce ideas back and forth,” said Massa (a) about the three-time winning duo.

The team earned $2,000 ($1,000 each) for the victory today.

There was also a playoff for the Senior Division title. Stuart Hendley, PGA director of instruction at Dallas Athletic Club, and Mark Motes (a), faced off against Cameron Doan, PGA director of golf at Preston Trail Golf Club, and Chip Carter (a). Both teams recorded rounds of 70 today and finished the championship at 7-under-par.

Doan and Carter (a) started their day on the 10th hole, the pair made two birdies in the first three holes, and added two more in their next five. A stretch of three bogeys on #18, #1 and #2 threatened to douse the pair's hot start. “We made a couple bad bogeys, we both three-putted #1,” said Doan. “It got harder as the day went and as the wind got blowing.”

The duo carded one more birdie on #4 before they finished with five consecutive pars. Finishing around 1 p.m. the eventual winners would have to anxiously wait out the afternoon hours to see if their two-stroke clubhouse lead would hold, but it did not.

Hendley and Motes (a), the 2022 champions, had a turbulent round that can be summed up in their final three holes. Double bogey, birdie, birdie. Hendley sank a 30-foot putt on the final hole of regulation to secure their spot into the playoff.

The playoff for the Senior Division title began on the par-4, 10th hole. After both teams made par they proceeded to the par-5, 11th hole where they tied again, but with birdies. Fighting darkness the two teams proceeded back to the tenth tee for one final hole.

Carter (a) and Hendley both found the fairway, while Motes (a) and Doan missed it. Playing first Doan hit his approach just off the back of the green, while Hendley hit it about 30 feet past the flag to the back portion of the green.

Doan quickly hit his putt before the final remnants of light were gone. 63-feet, down the hill, breaking right to left. Just as the clock struck 8 p.m. the putt dropped and left Doan and Carter with the victory.

“I was actually up there this morning…probably four or five feet to the right of where I was. I knew what the read was,” said Doan. Carter (a) added, “It was beautiful. I didn’t have to do anything.”

The team earned $1,300 ($650 each) for the Senior Division victory today.

The Srixon and Nike Pro-Scratch Championship was presented by Adventures in Golf, BlueGolf, Dan Liscio & Donald Ross Sportswear, Flagstick Films, Jim Quinn’s Finer Golf Products, Maui Jim, Perry Weather, Premier Greens and Vortex® Golf.
