CARROLLTON, TX – The Northern Texas PGA captured the 42nd Texas Joe Black Cup Matches by an overall points total of 13.5 to 10.5. They took a one-point lead heading into today’s Singles Matches, needing an additional six points to capture the Matches and reclaim the cup.

Team STPGA started strong, securing the first match of the morning and halving the second, but solid play from Texas Joe Black Cup Matches rookie JJ Killeen, PGA director of golf at Red Feather Golf and Social Club, in the third match,  put a point on the board for Team NTPGA.  Killeen won 5&4 over The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch’s PGA director of golf, Corey Roberson.

The mid-morning matches were back and forth with several ending in ties and halving the points for each team.  Momentum began to go Team NTPGA’s way in matches eight, nine and ten.  These three matches all had Team NTPGA Texas Joe Black Cup Matches veterans and all ended with a win for the Northern side.

The final point that Team NTPGA needed for the victory was secured in the ninth match when Brandon Veld, PGA head professional at Red Feather Golf and Social Club, won hole #17 to secure a 3&1 win over Roland Thatcher, PGA director of golf at The Woodlands Country Club. Veld is now 6-0-0 in the Texas Joe Black Cup Matches.

Heading into the 42nd playing, the overall team records were 20-19-2 in favor of the Southern Texas PGA. Now, the overall record sits level at

20-20-2.

The teams from each Section were represented by their Section President, the top playing PGA Directors of Golf, PGA Head Professionals and PGA General Managers and a Captain’s Pick. Courtney Connell, PGA head professional at Mira Vista Country Club, was captain of the Northern Texas PGA team, and Doug DeSive, PGA head professional at Dominion Country Club, served as the Southern Texas PGA captain.

The Texas Joe Black Cup Matches is an annual competition between the Northern Texas PGA and the Southern Texas PGA Sections. The event was started in 1981 to honor Joe Black, a Snyder, Texas native who was completing his first year as President of The PGA of America that year.

One point was awarded to a winning match and a half point was awarded to any match that ended in a tie after eighteen holes.

The Matches were contested at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas, and was presented by Club Car, Mizzen+Main and STITCH.

The PGA of America announced today that Ronny Glanton, PGA head professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course, will be inducted into the PGA of America Hall of Fame. Glanton, a native of Mineral Wells, Texas, began his career in 1981 as an Assistant Professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course in Richardson, Texas. Upon achieving PGA of America membership in 1984, he took over as Head Professional and has been at the Richardson facility ever since. He is the only member to serve twice as President of the NTPGA (2006-07, ‘18-’19). Glanton played a key role in the PGA of America’s relocation to Frisco, Texas. He is a passionate advocate for junior golf, developing impactful programs like the Sherrill Park Learning Center and the Hawks junior golf team, which have introduced thousands of new golfers to the game; his leadership in the creation of “The Ronny” Golf Park on the PGA Frisco campus further expands community outreach and player development. Among his previous awards are PGA of America Golf Professional of the Year (2020), NTPGA Golf Professional of the Year (1999, ‘07, ‘19), NTPGA Bill Strausbaugh Award (2003-05, ‘08, ‘14) and NTPGA Merchandiser of the Year (1994), plus induction into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame in 2022. He’s also been a four-time contestant in the PGA Professional Championship, five-time contestant in the Senior PGA Professional National Championship and seven-time participant in the PGA TOUR Byron Nelson (now the CJ Cup Byron Nelson). Glanton is a three-time NTPGA Major Champion, six-time Senior Division Major Champion and a 17-time member of the NTPGA Joe Black Cup Team, which he has also captained three times. The PGA of America Hall of Fame originated in 1940 at the suggestion of famed sportswriter Grantland Rice. It is the highest honor the PGA of America can bestow upon its membership or ambassadors of the game.
