Southern Texas PGA Captures Inaugural Levy Cup Matches

NTPGA • October 17, 2017

Dallas, Texas – The Southern Texas PGA captured the inaugural Levy Cup Matches by an overall point total of 14 to 10. The Matches were tied following the first day of competition, with the Northern Texas and Southern Texas Sections both earning six points apiece, but the STPGA team secured early key Singles matches today for the victory. It was Troy Schleicher, PGA teaching professional at Lake Windcrest Golf Club, whose match clinched the cup. Schleicher bested Robert McMillan, PGA director of instruction at McMillan Golf Academy. His 2&1 victory gave the STPGA team the 13th point they needed to claim the first cup.

“We have had a lot of fun these last few days. The South Texas and the North Texas have such a great relationship," said Mr. Paul Levy during the awards ceremony. "It really was kind of surreal, you know seeing your name up there. I never got involved in the PGA to have a cup match or to have something come back. I thank you all."

The Levy Cup Matches is a newly created annual competition between the Northern Texas PGA and the Southern Texas PGA Sections. The Ryder Cup-style format features teams represented by six Assistant PGA Professionals and six Senior PGA Professionals (any classification, age 50 and older) who qualified through their respective Section Major Championships. The teams competed in Four-Ball and Foursome Matches day one and Singles Matches the final day. These Matches were created this year to celebrate the PGA of America's President, Paul Levy who is completing his first year of a two-year term as President of The PGA of America.

Randy Smith, golf professional emeritus and director of instruction at Royal Oaks Country Club, and Clif Nelson, assistant professional at Royal Oaks Country Club, served as Co-Captains for the NTPGA Team. The STPGA Co-Captains were Charlie Eskridge, a golf executive at with Padre Isles Management Company and Eskridge Properties, and Christopher Pribyl, assistant professional at Houston Country Club.

One point was awarded to a winning match and a half point was awarded to any match that was tied after eighteen holes. The Matches were contested at Royal Oaks Country Club a par 71-layout in Dallas, Texas.
