53 Make Cut

Garland, TX - Nicole Budnik of The Woodlands, Texas, will take a one-stroke lead into tomorrow’s final round of the Energy Producers, Inc. Texas Women’s Open at Firewheel Golf Park over Round One leader Meagan Winans (a) of Richardson, Texas. Budnik finished at 2-under-par in today’s round to sit at 6-under 138 for the Championship. She notched four birdies and two bogeys for her 70 today.

“My round today was okay. Nothing too crazy,” Budnik stated after today’s morning round. “I took advantage of the par fives. Besides that I just stayed patient. There were some pins out there that were a little tight, so I hit to the middle of the green and two-putted for my par and got the birdies when I could get them. I birdied the last hole today, #18 the par five. I was 41 yards away in two and I almost chipped it in for eagle and tapped in for my birdie, so it kind of gives me some confidence going into tomorrow. For tomorrow to mentally prepare I’ll just keep trying to stick to my game plan by hitting fairways and hitting greens.”

Following today’s round, the 106-player field was cut to the low 50 scores and ties. Budnik will lead a field of 53 players into the final round of the Championship. 32 professionals and 21 amateurs survived the cut, which was at 9-over-par 153.

The overall championship purse is $50,000. The 32 remaining professionals in the field are competing for a share of the professional purse with the low professional set to take home $10,000.

The 21 remaining amateurs are competing for the Low Amateur award and a crystal trophy. The top five amateurs will receive gift certificates. Currently, Winans (a) sits atop the Low Amateur leaderboard at 5-under-par 139.

The 53 players who made the cut will also be competing for an LPGA Tour exemption. The 2019 Champion will receive an exemption into the 2019 Volunteers of America Classic to be played on October 3-6, 2019, at Old American Golf Club.

The 54-hole stroke play event began with a field of 106 top playing professionals and amateurs competing at Firewheel Golf Park’s - Bridges Course (Masters and Champions nines) in Garland, Texas. This is the first year for Firewheel Golf Park to host the Championship.
