GARLAND, TEXAS – Meagan Winans (a) of Richardson, Texas, a rising junior at Plano East High School, leads after the first round of the Energy Producers, Inc. Texas Women’s Open at Firewheel Golf Park. She shot an opening round of 33-33–66, 6-under-par carding seven birdies and one bogey for the day.

Winans stated after her round, “During my round today, it kind of started off slow, but about the fourth hole I had my first birdie. Then the putts started falling in and after that it was kind of a relaxed, easy-going round. I was trying not to think about what I was at all day.”

Winans, who qualified for the Championship at the The Legends Junior Tour’s Bluebonnet Championship, will take a two-stroke lead into tomorrow’s second round over Jessica Maynard of Petaluma, California, and Nicole Budnik, of The Woodlands, Texas, who are tied for 2nd at 4-under 68.

The 49 professionals in the field are competing for a share of the $50,000 overall purse. The 57 amateurs are competing for the Low Amateur award and a crystal trophy. The top five amateurs will receive gift certificates to Firewheel Golf Park. After tomorrow’s second round, the field will be cut to the low 50 scores and ties.
