NTPGA • July 28, 2016

LEWISVILLE, Texas – After two suspensions of play yesterday at the Veritex Bank Texas State Open, round two was completed this morning at 7:00 a.m., and the cut was made shortly after. Fifty-nine players survived the cut at 2-under-par, 142. Fifty-seven of those competitors were professionals and two were amateurs.

Juan Fernandez of Scottsdale, Arizona continued his great play through the third round of the 46th Veritex Bank Texas State Open. To follow up his record-setting round yesterday, Fernandez carded five birdies and notched yet another eagle on hole #18, to finish at 7-under-par 65 for the day. He remains at the top of the leaderboard at 20-under-par 196. Fernandez will take a six-stroke lead heading into tomorrow’s final round.

“I’ve been hitting my irons really good this week, so I’ve been taking advantage of that and really picked my spots on the greens where I want to leave myself to have a good look at birdie. I’ve been doing really good at that, and that’s why I’ve been having a lot of good solid looks at birdie. It’s just trusting that those swings are going to be there,” Fernandez said of his week so far.

2012 Texas State Open Champion Nathan Tyler of Tucson, Arizona and Alex Moon of Dallas, Texas sit tied for second place at 14-under-par 202. They will try to catch Fernandez tomorrow when they tee off together in the final pairing at 10:00 a.m.

Matt Gilchrest (a) of Southlake, Texas positioned himself in the current top spot for Low Amateur honors by shooting 7-under-par 65 today. Gilchrest is a rising senior at Auburn University and is currently tied for fourth place in the Championship at 13-under-par 203 with 2014 Texas State Open Champion Anthony Broussard of Addison, Texas.

Matt Lohmeyer, PGA teaching professional at GolfTec in Fort Worth, and Brian Norman, PGA teaching professional at Gleneagles Country Club, are currently tied for Low PGA Professional honors at 6-under par 210. Greg Gregory, PGA assistant professional at Hidden Creek Golf Course, sits just one shot back of them at 5-under-par 211.

The Lakes at Castle Hills is hosting the 72-hole stroke play event and the course is a 7,297-yard, par 72 layout. The purse is $182,500 with $36,500 to be awarded to the champion.

LEWISVILLE, Texas (September 16) – Adam Headley, PGA head professional at Green Tree Country Club captured the Joyce Crane | Veritex Bank Section Championship after a 6-under-par final round. His bogey-free 34-32–66 and a first round 69, got him to 9-under-par for the Championship and a one stroke victory. It also earned Headley an exemption into the 2026 THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson. Headley was playing in the third to last group and began the final round three strokes behind the leaders. He quickly fell further behind the lead after starting with three pars, until a birdie at the par-5 4th hole got things going. On the back nine it was a battle between Headley and Brian Norman, PGA instructor at Lakewood Country Club. Headley eagled the 12th hole and added two more birdies on 15 and 18 to close and post 9-under-par. “My goal today was to play the par fives 4-under. I accomplished that,” said Headley. “I don’t like to look at the leaderboard, but I looked at it going into 18 tee and had a feeling I was sitting pretty good there.” “Honestly I didn’t think I'd ever win one. Not because I'm not a good player but because we have so many good players in the Section. If I had to choose any tournament to win, it would be this one.” Headley earned $9,250 along with his exemption into THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson. “I’ve been a golf pro for almost 20 years and now to be playing in a PGA TOUR event, I don’t care how I do, It’s going to be a blast. I’m super excited about it, it’s a dream come true.”
