About David Price, PGA

David Price began honing his golf skills on the teams at Odessa Permian High School and later at the University of Texas, where his team, led by legends Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite, won back-to-back national championships in 1971 and 1972. After earning a finance degree in 1972, and with encouragement from his coach and mentor, George Hannon, Price pursued a career as a golf professional.

He started as an assistant professional at Houston Country Club. Price would tell you that he clearly remembers earning $5 for his first lesson, and half of that went back to the head professional. However, it was during this time that he realized that his passion for understanding the golf swing and the game itself would shape a lifelong career in the sport. He was the PGA head professional at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio from 1973-1985.

On March 22, 1985, Price was named the head golf professional at Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas. His selection was influenced by his deep knowledge of the handicap system, his innovative work in computerizing scores, and his experience managing events—an essential qualification with the upcoming Senior Players Reunion Pro-Am at the club. A few years later, he was one of just 15 PGA Professionals selected to help author the PGA's first tournament manual, contributing his expertise on computerized handicapping.

In 1987, the PGA of America invited Price to join its Rules Committee. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to serve as Chairman for four years, completing his tenure in 2012. During that time, he officiated at many of golf’s premier events, including The Masters, The Ryder Cup, the U.S. Open, the British Open, and the PGA Championship. He also represented the PGA of America on the USGA’s Rules of Golf Committee during the 2016 rulebook rewrite.

Throughout his career, Price has mentored numerous aspiring professionals. Twenty-one of his former assistants went on to become head professionals, and one became the women's golf coach at the University of Texas.

Price received the PGA of America’s Golf Professional of the Year award in 1995. He was inducted into the PGA of America Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Texas Golf Hall of Fame in 2012.
