Three Share Lead After Round One of the TPx Communications Western Championship

EULESS, TX – Matt Lohmeyer, PGA teaching professional at GolfTEC-Montgomery Plaza, Christopher Brown, caddie on the PGA TOUR, and Ben Kern, PGA head professional at Oeste Ranch Golf Course, are all tied for the lead at the TPx Communications Western Championship after Round one. Lohmeyer carded six birdies and two bogeys to open the Championship, while Brown notched five birdies and just one bogey to each open with 4-under par 67. Kern had a bogey-free round and four birdies for his 67.

They currently hold a one-stroke lead over David Studebaker, assistant professional at Cross Timbers Golf Course, who fired a 3-under 68. Studebaker carded an eagle, four birdies and three bogeys during his opening round.

Defending champion Stuart Deane, PGA director of golf at The University of Texas at Arlington, carded five birdies and three bogies to shoot a 2-under par 69 to sit two shots back of the leaders.

The Championship includes a Senior Division that is comprised of 31 professionals aged 50 or older who are competing for a separate $8,525 estimated purse and playing at a modified yardage. The Senior champion will take home $1,425. Stuart Hendley, PGA director of instruction at Green Tree Country Club, is currently leading the Senior Division at 1-under par, 70.

Also during today’s round, Keith Coppedge, PGA head professional at The Golf Club of Dallas, notched a hole-in-one on hole #16. He hit a 9-iron from 160 yards for his ace.

The TPx Communications Western Championship is conducted by the Northern Texas PGA Section and is presented by AT&T Byron Nelson, Barrington Gifts, Nexbelt, PGA TOUR, PlayKleen and TurfHound. This 36-hole NTPGA major championship is the second of four individual stroke play events that comprise the Yamaha Golf-Car Company / Lajitas Golf Resort Player of the Year Points Challenge presented by Adventures In Golf, and serves as a qualifier for the 2017 Texas Joe Black Cup team.

The Championship is being conducted at Texas Star Golf Course in Euless, Texas, a 6,878-yard, par 71 layout.

The 121-player field is comprised of golf professionals from the Northern Texas Section of the PGA of America who are competing for an estimated overall purse of $35,250. Professionals in the Open division are competing for a projected $24,725 purse with the champion taking home $3,600.

GRAPEVINE, Texas – Registration is now open for the 2026 Destination Grapevine Texas Women’s Open and its qualifying events. The Championship will take place Wednesday, May 27, through Friday, May 29, at Grapevine Golf Course. This 46th year of the Championship marks another chapter in the event’s rich history, continuing its tradition as one of the premier women’s tournaments in Texas. The projected overall purse is $80,000. For the third consecutive year, Grapevine Golf Course will serve as host, reinforcing the City of Grapevine’s commitment to supporting and growing women’s golf. The 2026 Championship continues its partnership with the ANNIKA Women’s All Pro Tour (WAPT). Thanks to the support of the ANNIKA WAPT, this Championship allows the top two finishers to receive exemptions into the Epson Tour’s Island Resort Championship, June 22–28 in Harris, Michigan. Additionally, ANNIKA WAPT members will earn points toward the Callaway Race to Q2, with all earnings counting toward the 2026 ANNIKA WAPT Official Money List. A total of 144 players will compete in a 54-hole stroke play format, with a cut to the low 50 players and ties after 36 holes. New for 2026, players shall gain access to compete in the Championship through qualifying events unless they are otherwise exempt.
