Deane Captures TelePacific Communications Western Championship

NTPGA • July 19, 2016

FORT WORTH, TX – Stuart Deane, PGA golf coach at The University of Texas at Arlington, carded five birdies and three bogeys on his way to claiming his third TelePacific Communications Western Championship. He fired a final round of 2-under 69 to finish the event 3-under-par with rounds of 70-69--139. Deane also won this Championship in 2012 and 2013. With this win, Stuart now has won 11 Northern Texas PGA Individual Major Championships.

"I think last week helped [with this win today]. I played last week with Casey Devoll down in the Texas Team Championship, and I played really nice there, so that gave me some confidence heading into this event," said Deane. "I felt like I was putting well, it was just a matter of if I could hit it well. The win feels really good though. Mira Vista has always been really good to me, so it was nice to be here."

Deane took home a $3,700 check for his victory.

Four players finished tied for second, one stroke behind Deane at 2-under-par 140, including Deane’s partner from last week’s event Casey Devoll who is also a golf coach at The University of Texas at Arlington. Round one co-leader Brian Norman, PGA teaching professional at Gleneagles Country Club, tied for second along with 2015 champion Greg Gregory, PGA assistant professional at Hidden Creek Golf Course, and David Studebaker, assistant professional at Cross Timbers Golf Course. Norman notched a hole-in-one on hole #3 hitting a 7-iron 179 yards for the ace, but even that was not enough to overcome Deane.

The Championship included a Senior Division comprised of 32 professionals aged 50 or older who competed for a separate $8,850 purse and played at a modified yardage. Ronny Glanton, PGA head professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course, captured the Senior Division carding a 1-over-par round in today’s final round to finish at 2-under par for a tournament total of 140. Glanton took home a first place check for $1,550.

The TelePacific Communications Western Championship was conducted by the Northern Texas PGA Section and was presented by Adventures In Golf, AT&T Byron Nelson, Junior.Golf, Nexbelt, PGA TOUR, PlayKleen, TINO’S GOLF, and TurfHound.

The Championship was conducted at Mira Vista Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, a 6,890-yard, par 71 layout from July 18 to 19.
The 128-player field was comprised of golf professionals from the Northern Texas Section of the PGA of America who competed for an overall purse of $37,360. Professionals in the Open division competed for a $26,850 purse.

This 36-hole NTPGA major championship was the second of four individual stroke play events that comprise the Yamaha Golf-Car Company / Lajitas Golf Resort Player of the Year Points Challenge, and served as a qualifier for the 2016 Texas Joe Black Cup team.

THE COLONY, Texas (March 2) – The team of Robert Bruns, PGA Head Professional at Trinity Forest Golf Club, along with partner Chase Walts, PGM Student at Methodist University who currently works as an assistant at Trinity Forest Golf Club won the 2026 KBS TOUR Shafts Pro-Assistant Championship after a two hole playoff. The two carded a bogey-free, 12-under-par, final score after shooting 64 on Old American Golf Club and a 31 on the back nine of Tribute Golf Links. They bested the team of Spencer Dillard and Alastair Jones from Preston Trail Golf Club. The 27-hole, Four-Ball Stroke Play Championship was hosted at Golf Clubs at The Tribute for the sixth straight year. Teams played Old American Golf Club and the back nine of Tribute Golf Links. Bruns and Walts both had looks inside 10 feet on the second playoff hole, though it was Bruns who poured in the winning putt. “I knew he had it in the bag, so I think that made it much easier for me to just be free and let it go,” said Bruns. Walts recently became an assistant professional at Trinity Forest, and said, “Robert is such a huge mentor to me and my career already. I hope to learn from everything he knows and that goes for golf as well.” “It makes it much easier when you’re in the mix coming down the fairway and you have a great relationship with each other. At the end of the day you’re just having fun,” Bruns said after their victory. This is the first win for both Bruns and Walts in Section Major Championships. The pair earned $3,200 ($1,600 each) out of the record $32,000 total championship purse. The KBS TOUR Shafts Pro-Assistant Championship was presented by Callaway Golf, Club Car, Evolve Golf, Landmark Golf Course Products, Range Servant, THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, and Winston Collection. It is about stewardship. He then gave four notes about his commitment in these next two years – to represent all Members, across facilities, across classifications, across backgrounds, to listen carefully, to communicate clearly, and to support the staff and volunteers who carry this Section forward every day. He finished his comments by saying, “I do not intend to reinvent what is already strong. I intend to build on it.” Thank you to all of the PGA of America Golf Professionals in our Section who attended these special and important events over the past few days.
