Sepmoree Becomes First Female Professional to Win an NTPGA Section Major Championship at the Prize Possessions | E-Z-GO Eastern Championship

ROCKWALL, TX – Northern Texas PGA history was made today when Katelyn Sepmoree, assistant professional at Willow Brook Country Club captured the title at the Prize Possessions | E-Z-GO Eastern Championship. The victory for Sepmoree marks the first time that a female professional has won an Individual Major Championship in the Section.

Sepmoree speaking about making history said it is “Super cool. I think women’s golf is definitely moving in the right direction and we’re establishing that we can play golf out here. I actually had someone that works at the club [Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club] say that she was really pumped to watch me do what I was doing. It caught me off guard, because in my head I’m just out here playing golf and she saw it as the girl against the guys.”

Sepmoree carded an opening round 70 and was 1-under-par in her final round before play was suspended due to darkness last night. With six holes to play this morning she made five straight pars until the par-5, 18th hole where she was able to get up and down for a closing birdie to force a playoff.

Brian Norman, PGA instructor at Lakewood Country Club and Sepmoree went back to the 18th tee for what turned out to be a one hole playoff. Sepmoree was able to get on the green in regulation and two putt for a par to win. “It feels great, I haven’t been in contention in anything in a while. Definitely could feel the nerves, which is a good feeling to have,” said Sepmoree. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to come out here and play the sport that I love.”

Sepmoree will head back to Tyler with a $3,800 winner’s check.

The championship also featured a Senior Division that was able to finish play yesterday. It was made up of 36 professionals aged 50 and over, playing for a separate title and purse of $12,800. Rick Woodson, PGA instructor at Sherrill Park Golf Course earned the crown and $1,600.

This 36-hole Northern Texas PGA major championship was the first of four individual stroke play events that comprise the Yamaha Golf-Car Company | Srixon / Cleveland Golf / Asics Player of the Year Points Challenge presented by Adventures In Golf. The field competed for a record overall purse of $48,000.

The Prize Possessions | E-Z-GO Eastern Championship was presented by AT&T Byron Nelson, Branded Bills, GT Golf Supplies, Levelwear, Nexbelt, PGA TOUR, and PXG.

The PGA of America announced today that Ronny Glanton, PGA head professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course, will be inducted into the PGA of America Hall of Fame. Glanton, a native of Mineral Wells, Texas, began his career in 1981 as an Assistant Professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course in Richardson, Texas. Upon achieving PGA of America membership in 1984, he took over as Head Professional and has been at the Richardson facility ever since. He is the only member to serve twice as President of the NTPGA (2006-07, ‘18-’19). Glanton played a key role in the PGA of America’s relocation to Frisco, Texas. He is a passionate advocate for junior golf, developing impactful programs like the Sherrill Park Learning Center and the Hawks junior golf team, which have introduced thousands of new golfers to the game; his leadership in the creation of “The Ronny” Golf Park on the PGA Frisco campus further expands community outreach and player development. Among his previous awards are PGA of America Golf Professional of the Year (2020), NTPGA Golf Professional of the Year (1999, ‘07, ‘19), NTPGA Bill Strausbaugh Award (2003-05, ‘08, ‘14) and NTPGA Merchandiser of the Year (1994), plus induction into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame in 2022. Glanton actively supports his colleagues, raising over $100,000 through pro-ams for PGA Members facing medical hardships. He’s also been a four-time contestant in the PGA Professional Championship, five-time contestant in the Senior PGA Professional National Championship and seven-time participant in the PGA TOUR Byron Nelson (now the CJ Cup Byron Nelson). Glanton is a three-time NTPGA Major Champion, six-time Senior Division Major Champion and a 17-time member of the NTPGA Joe Black Cup Team, which he has also captained three times. The PGA of America Hall of Fame originated in 1940 at the suggestion of famed sportswriter Grantland Rice. It is the highest honor the PGA of America can bestow upon its membership or ambassadors of the game.
