Successful Morning Four-Ball Matches Earn Team NTPGA a Day One Lead at the Levy Cup Matches

Fort Worth, Texas – The Northern Texas PGA leads the Southern Texas PGA 7-5 after day one of the 5th Annual Levy Cup Matches. 


The Northern Texas PGA team finished with five points after the morning Four-Ball Matches to take a commanding four point lead. Highlights include Bruce Smith, PGA director of instruction at Black Belt Golf Academy and Spencer Dillard, PGA assistant professional at Preston Trail Golf Club, coming out victorious, beating John Gibson, PGA assistant professional at Memorial Park Golf Course and Patrick Peek, PGA assistant professional at Georgetown Country Club, 6&4.


In the afternoon Foursome Matches, Southern Texas PGA surged to close the gap and claimed four of the six matches. Brian Norman, PGA assistant professional at Royal Oaks Country Club and Billy Harris, PGA head professional at Dallas Country Club dominated their match to defeat Dylan Rowe, PGA assistant professional at Lochinvar Golf Club and Omar Uresti, PGA Life Member 5&4. They also won their morning match 3&2. Northern Texas maintained the overall lead heading into the Singles Matches tomorrow morning. They lead 7-5 over Southern Texas.


Mike Wright, PGA director of golf at Shady Oaks Country Club, and Jordan Marlow, PGA assistant professional at Shady Oaks Country Club, are serving as first-time Co-Captains for the Northern Texas PGA Team. The Southern Texas PGA Co-Captains are Ale Maurtua, PGA assistant professional at Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Club, and Playing Co-Captain Robert Thompson, PGA teaching professional at Whispering Pines Golf Club. 


The Ryder Cup-style format features teams represented by six Assistant PGA Professionals and six Senior PGA Professionals (any classification, aged 50 and older) who qualified through their respective Section Major Championships. The teams competed in Four-Ball and Foursome Matches today and will compete in Singles Matches tomorrow. These Matches were created in 2017 to celebrate Paul Levy who was completing his first year of a two-year term as President of the PGA of America.



Singles Matches will begin at 8:30 a.m. off of the first tee on Tuesday morning. The Matches are being contested at River Crest Country Club, a 6,512-yard, par 70 layout in Fort Worth, Texas. The senior division is playing from 6,054 yards. One point is awarded to a winning match and a half point is awarded to any match that is tied after eighteen holes.

The PGA of America announced today that Ronny Glanton, PGA head professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course, will be inducted into the PGA of America Hall of Fame. Glanton, a native of Mineral Wells, Texas, began his career in 1981 as an Assistant Professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course in Richardson, Texas. Upon achieving PGA of America membership in 1984, he took over as Head Professional and has been at the Richardson facility ever since. He is the only member to serve twice as President of the NTPGA (2006-07, ‘18-’19). Glanton played a key role in the PGA of America’s relocation to Frisco, Texas. He is a passionate advocate for junior golf, developing impactful programs like the Sherrill Park Learning Center and the Hawks junior golf team, which have introduced thousands of new golfers to the game; his leadership in the creation of “The Ronny” Golf Park on the PGA Frisco campus further expands community outreach and player development. Among his previous awards are PGA of America Golf Professional of the Year (2020), NTPGA Golf Professional of the Year (1999, ‘07, ‘19), NTPGA Bill Strausbaugh Award (2003-05, ‘08, ‘14) and NTPGA Merchandiser of the Year (1994), plus induction into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame in 2022. Glanton actively supports his colleagues, raising over $100,000 through pro-ams for PGA Members facing medical hardships. He’s also been a four-time contestant in the PGA Professional Championship, five-time contestant in the Senior PGA Professional National Championship and seven-time participant in the PGA TOUR Byron Nelson (now the CJ Cup Byron Nelson). Glanton is a three-time NTPGA Major Champion, six-time Senior Division Major Champion and a 17-time member of the NTPGA Joe Black Cup Team, which he has also captained three times. The PGA of America Hall of Fame originated in 1940 at the suggestion of famed sportswriter Grantland Rice. It is the highest honor the PGA of America can bestow upon its membership or ambassadors of the game.
